visual story: a brotherhood

In the early summer, I ventured to the Arboretum with a family of five. We timed it right at the end of lilac blooming season and were lucky to still have some amazing blooms. The two older boys were adventurers and climbed among the trees and bushes, with the little brother following along.

During their travels, the oldest found mushrooms in the forest and got creative in presentation. And at the end, he and his brother build a twig fort. It was a fabulous morning of brotherhood and boys being boys.

senior season begins

Today marks the beginning of senior portrait season. I had my first session of the season and I am looking forward to editing the session and getting some posted. We ended the session with a snowboard, goggles, ski hat at gloves. Outside in the sun. That lasted about 3 minutes! All part of the plan, but not something you want to do everyday.

This summer, I have a high school senior helping me keep my sanity and stay organized. While these aren’t her official senior portraits, I took a few shots down the street on her first day and posted one here.

And speaking of senior portraits – just a friendly reminder that the Middleton yearbook deadline is early September. Sessions and orders must be completed by August 19th to make the deadline.

cutie pie

Before I left on vacation, I had the cutest little girl in the studio for a session. Just adorable. And with the sunshine pouring into the studio, I was able to take advantage of the beauty of natural light.

I’ve been thinking about natural light vs. studio light lately – and I definitely favor natural light. The feathering of the shadow from window light can be stunning.

25 dogs later

The Doggy Daze sessions are over and now it’s time to edit, tweak, and get them ready for the judging rounds.

The sessions went really well and I learned a few things about dogs. For one, they are no different than their human owners. Some of us know how to work the camera, some of us hate the camera. Some of us get really nervous and want to hide, some of us get really excited and want to jump up and down!

From the whippet that hid in the closet to the dancing hunting dogs to the perfectly posed boxer, I had to stay on my toes. Just like kids under the age of 5, they move a lot and are completely unpredictable. I know everyone is eagerly waiting to see the images, so here are few to get started. More will be on the way soon…

purple goose :: the spring shoot

In between the Doggy Daze sessions, I photographed the Purple Goose spring collection yesterday. Great clothes, fantastic hair, amazing make-up, and fabulous models. Bridget at Studio Quest salon and Fran made the models look absolutely perfect. Plus, we lucked out with one of those sixty degree spring days.

I’ll be posting more images soon, but I just couldn’t wait to get these posted!

to my four-legged friends

I love dogs and love photographing them even more. In truth, our dog was our first child. Spoiled and cuddled to no end. I am sure he is wondering what the heck happened, now that there are little humans crawling over him and chasing him around the house!

Next week I’ll be announcing  a fun event and fundraiser for the Dane County Humane Society….The Doggy Daze. Stay tuned and get your treats ready!

fly in the air

As I finish up an album design on a session from this fall, this fun image reminds me of the warm sun on my face.

Most people in Wisconsin agree that we are ready for winter to be over. But then again it’s only the end of January and we choose to live here, right? Time to go warm up…

january catch-up

Now that I changed over my blog, I am now ready to tackle the other parts of my web presence. I’ll be reworking the website by the end of the month (luckily, web programming is something that I still know how to do!). And all the pre-holiday orders that didn’t make the holiday deadline are being finished this week and next. It’s been a busy week – and it’s only Tuesday! As I process the last few sessions of 2009, I’ll be posting some of my favorites.

We started inside for this session and then headed outside to enjoy the windy, but beautiful fall weather.  Several years ago, I first photographed the older brother when he was about six months old. Now, with a little brother in tow, we had even more fun. It was hard to narrow down the images and we ended up with the very popular nine-image wall portrait.
